Cicerale

The area of Cicerale. whose name comes from the Latin cicer (Chickpeas) was crossed by an important road that connected thè two cities of Paestum and Elea. The first records of the town date back to 882AD. When it was invaded by Saracens. Under the reign of Frederick II° a fortress of great strategic importance was established here. This became the Emperor’s headquarters in 1246 during the military operations against a group of rebellious aristocrats hiding in Capaccio. Of this ancient fortress, however very little remains today, but these ruins are well worth a visit Also of interest are the Palazzo Baron ale and the Augustinian convent both erected during the feudal age, and the elegant 16th century Palazzo Carafa. In the vicinity of Cicerale are some areas of Mediterranean shrub land of great naturalistic interest. One is located on top of Mount Cicerale and another one can be found around the suburb of Bocca di Fava (the ancient Corbella). In this beautiful natural landscape visitors can also admire the ruins of a 13th century castle.
