Corleto Monforte
Corleto was probably founded by the Lucian people in the 5th century BC, in a valley, the Valle Della Flagella, which had been previously been inhabited by Greek settlers. Evidence of this historical interaction is the numerous artifacts that were found in the area. The name Corleto derives from Coryletum, refering to the many hazelnut trees (Corylus avellana) that used to grow here. The growth of this town was influenced by the presence of a Hospital, the Ospedale di San Zaccaria, which had direct links with the important Hospital of Santo Spirito of Rome, and benefited considerably from such an association. The historical centre is full of interesting architecture, such as the town's imposing tower, and the Church Santi Filippo e Giacomo, where, according to a local legend, a book of prayers was left here by Saint Peter during his travels.
