Cuccaro Vetere
The Greek term Cocheros, meaning "mountain top", perfectly describes the geographical position of this town which overlooks the valleys descending towards Palinuro. Such a location was used first by the community of Velia. who built here a fortress, and later by the Normans who erected here a castle and defensive walls. The town was subsequently declared a feudal estate by Emperor Frederick II. Religion, as much as Politics, has played a considerable part in shaping the town's history and landscape. A community of Italian-Greek monks was first established here (dedicated to San Nicola di Mira) followed by, in 1333 a Franciscan Monastery whose ruins are still visible today. The town still has its original castle, complete with towers, and many beautiful churches, such as the 17th century San Pietro Apostolo, where a reliquary containing fragments of the holy cross can be admired.
