Here, Roman veterans of the roman-Jewish war carne to live with their slaves after the emperor Titus besieged and destroyed the town of Jerusalem. Moio is first mentioned in historical records in the year 1052, although there probably was a p existent Greek settlement here, possibly a defensive construction built by the citizens of Velia. Today, this community is comprised the two suburbs of Moio and Pellare. Visitors to the town can admire the ancient church of Santa Veneranda in the ancient borgo of Moio. Those interested in the area's rural past will find a large collection 18th century artefacts in the Museo della Civiltà Contadina. The town also hosts an archaeological park where a group of ancient dwellings and a place of worship have been excavated.
