Montesano sulla Marcellana
At the border with the area of Lucania, on the mountain chain of the Maddalena, Montesano is dose to the gorge leading from the Vallo di Diano to the nearby Val D'agri. Local historians have discovered how the early inhabitants of Marcellinum, came up here around the year 1000, fleeing epidemics and the insalubrious air of the plains. Indeed the pure mountain air and the local spring waters, with their low percentages of mineral compounds, have turned Montesano into a renowned spa town which explains the towns name: Montesano means literally "healthy mountain". "Marcellana", is instead a reference to the Via Marcellana, the road that runs through Montesano The town has a Byzantine style Abbey dedicated to Santa Maria di Canossa, and the Church of San Vito.
