Ogliastro Cilento

This hilltop town was named "Oleastrum" because of its age-old olive groves. Unfortunately, very little is left of the Castello di Ogliastro, the town's medieval castle. The only remains are the ruins of the tower which in 1848 sheltered those who look part in the Moti del Cilento, a local rebellion against the Bourbonic King who stood in the way of Italy's unification. Of considerable interest, also, the Monastery, dedicated to Saint Leonardo, which belonged first to the Dominicans, and later to the Franciscan order. The complex beautifully dominates the hilts of the area. Ogtiastro's main economic resources are the farming and production of figs and, more recently, the industrial development of the surrounding area. Rich in history and heritage, the neighbouring villages of Eredita and Finocchito, are a must see, together with the 16th century Church of Santa Croce, the Chapel of San Rocco, and the many aristocratic palaces of Ogliastro's historical town centre.
