Torchiara
Originally, the name of Torchiara probably had the rather evocati
meaning of "sun lit tower". The first inhabitants of this town car
from nearby coastal viltages seeking refuge from the Saracen inci
sions. According to a locai legend seven towers were built here \
defensive purposes. However, there are no ruins to suggest tnat tì
was the case. However, two largo towers were added to the toc
church giving it the appearance of an imposing fortress. Torchiar,
town centre is embellished by many palazzos, built here by the loi
noble families, such as the Palazzo Baronale and Palazzo Torre, ai
by the historical Churches of San Salvatore and San Bernardino
