Casalbuono

Perched on a hilltop, overlooking the valley and the nearby Roman consular road, Casalbuono was destroyed and completely rebuilt during the Anjevin domination of this region. But original town was first inhabited in A.D. 915 by citizens of the Roman centre of Cesariana, taking refuge on the hills for fear of the Saracen pirates that raided the coastline. Casalbuono was, during the Middle Ages, a much fought after territory, because of its pure air and the fertile land surrounding the town. High on the hill are the remain of the town's castle, which has been the residence of many feudal noble families, like the Sanseverino and Cardone. Now, the castle is known as Palazzo del Barone. The towns main church, Santa Maria delle Grazie, was erected in the 12th century.
