Caselle in Pittari

This little town up in the hills was called Caselle because this referred to the tiny dwellings that hermits used to build for them selves on Mount Pittari. Archaeological studies in the last decades have proved that this area has been inhabited since the prehistoric age. In the cave, known locally as Grotta di San Michele, various examples of pottery were discovered belonging to the bronzo age. At the beginning of the 11th century, the Lombard Prince of Sale Cuaimar (or Waimar) in, erected on Mount Pittari the Abbey of ' Sant'Angelo. Some of its ruins are still visible today. The Cave of Michele Arcangelo is accessible to visitors, and close by lies a Benedictine Monastery built in the year 1000. Other interesting landmmarks are the 14th century tower that dominates the surroundings, church of San Rocco and the Palace of Marchesale.
