Castelcivita

The present name was given to the town in 1863; previously. During the reign of the house of Anjou. Castelcivita was known as Civita Pantuliano and later Castelluccio. Little castle, by the Aragonese. Probably in reference to the beautiful Tower and walls which adorned the town in the 13th century commissioned by Charles I of Naples. The medieval structures are still visible. The narrow alleys, and the coats of arms of many noble families carved over the ancient portals have preserved the town’s medieval charm. Castelcivita, set as it is on a natural rise by the slopes of the Monty Alburni, offers spectacular views and an interesting system of natural caves. Inside some of them scientists nave found fossils belonging to prehistoric animals and the remains of Homo Neanderthalensis.
