The Municipalities of Cilento

Castellabate

This borgo was established here in 1123 as a result of barbarian invasions in the area. The town whose name literally means "Castle of the Abbot", was named in memory of the Abbot Costabile Gentilcore who convinced the Prince of Salerno to erect a castle so that the local people couid find protection here in the event of an attack. The town soon became one of the most densely populated and wealthy feudal estates of Cilento and, in 1412, it was given to King Ladislas of Naples by Pope Gregory XII as repayment on a large loan. The town hosts many buildings of considerable artistic and architectural interest, such as the church of Santa Maria de Gulia and the afore-mentioned castle, and the 17th century Palaces Perrotti and jaquinto. The town atso includes the four suburbs of Lago, Ogiiastro Marina, San Marco and Santa Maria.
