Castelnuovo Cilento
This hilltop town, Castelnuovo Cilento, overlooks the entire valley of the river alento And the beautiful Tyrrhenian coastline. It has grown around the local castle, originally an old Norman fortress, where the inhabitants of the area surrounding the Castle of La Bruca found refuge in the year 1000. For this reason, the place was named Castelnuovo, new castle. The castle was finally abandoned in 1860, because it had been badly compromised by an earthquake. Only recently in 1996, the owner of the ruins, the Marquis and Ambassador Giuseppe Talamo-Atenolfi, funded a massive restoration o castle returning it to some of its ancient glory.
