The Municipalities of Cilento

Ceraso

The town owes its name to the abundance of cherry trees (Prunus cerasus) that used to grow in this area where a community of monks - named cenobio di Santa Barbara - was founded and recognised Pope Eugene III in 1149. The area was probably inhabited previous ly by settlers coming from the ancient coastal towns of Focea, and Elea. The town of Ceraso has known considerable wealth, as a result of it's fertile soil and strategically relevant position at the fool mount Gelbison. This has prompted a considerable urban development, the finest examples of which are the Piazza San Silvestro, and the aristocratic palaces scattered around the town centre.
