The Municipalities of Cilento

Gioi

The town lies on the slopes of the Serra mountains in the Cilento inland offering sweeping views across the valleys and Tyrrhenian sea. Gioi is now a rather small town but its history ancient and interesting. The borgo was probably founded in the 7th century and has performed a key role in the defensive strategy of Norman kingdom. Gioi was given by the Aragonese king Ferdinand I to Antonello Petrucci who, however, soon after rebelled against benefactor and lost his feudal estate. The town was then sold Berlingieri Carafa. Today, the town still preserves some of the ancient monuments of its past such as the remains of the castle and beautiful Porta dei Leoni. Other interesting sites are the Franciscan convent and the Church of San Nicola.
