Ascea

The origin of this name is quite poetic: Ascea seems to derive from the Greek word askaidon, meaning "a place with no shadow" bathed in suns nine. And in fact, the town of Ascea is in an ideal position or top of a small hill looking over his sea. The town was founded by the citizens of the nearby settlement of Velia, in the 13th century, and it developed fully in the following two centuries, which gave the town its particular architectural and artistic appearance. The municipality of Ascea also includes four small suburbs: Catona. Mandia, Terradura and Marina of Ascea. The town has a very interesting archaeological park where recent excavations have uncovered the entire plan of the ancient city. The historical churches of Michele Arcangelo, San Nicola and Santa Sofia, and the beautiful buildings: Palazzo Alario, Palazzo Torrusio and Palazzo Ferolla are the main attractions of Ascea’s changing town centre.
