The Municipalities of Cilento

Lustra

The origins of this town are uncertain; it is thought that the citizens of the nearby town of Campi built the first houses, as hiding places in the event of a Saracen attack. According to this view, the town was then named Lustra, meaning "place full of sun light". Later, the Normans built a castle in the place where now stands the suburb of Rocca Cilento, but the building was eventually destroyed. Another Castle was erected here, in the 15th century, and this time the project bore the signature of illustrious architect Giuliano Da Sangallo. Of the same age is the Franciscan convent founded here by Saint Bernardino of Siena. This building can also be found in Rocca Cilento, the part of Lustra that has best preserved its medieval structure. Visitors lo the town of Lustra can also admire a beautiful Romanesque belltower.
