Magliano Vetere
Magliano Vetere was established here in Roman times, or before, as a result of the destruction of Paestum and Velia. The only certain fact is that it reached its maximum splendour under the Lombard domination when it became a fortress and a principality. Subsequently, Basilian monks carne to stay in the area and began to extensively farm the surrounding land. The town became, like its neighbours, the feudal estate of many lords such as the Carafes and the Pascas until its destruction in 1669 when its inhabitants were accused of offering shelter to a bandit. The citizens of Magliano Vetere had to evacuate the town and moved to a new area which they named Magliano Nuovo. Today, the old streets of Magliano Vetere have retained all their historical charm and they attract many visitors who admire what remains of the towers and the feudal palaces.
