Monteforte Cilento
This town owes its birth to the destruction of Paestum. The original settlement was probably meant to serve defensive purposes, as suggested by the town's name (Monteforte means fortress) and later the Barons of Novi built a fortified castle here which is unfortunately no longer standing. Most of the building materials belonging the castle have been re-used to erect the Church of San Pietro, a local landmark with beautiful frescoed interiors. The historic centre is well preserved and contains many aristocratic buildings with decorative doors and wrought iron railings. This centre is best known for landscape and wildlife; being far away from the main roads. the le biodiversity and stunning countryside have been very well preserved.
