Monte San Giacomo

Monte San Giacomo is perched on mount Serra la Manca in front of the Vallo di Diano surrounded on the northern side by the mountain range of the Maddalena. The town is named after its patron saint, Saint James. According to the traditional explanation, a religious fraternity dedicated to saint James stopped in this area during a pilgrimage and erected the church of San Giacomo. The foundation of the town dates back to the Norman reign but the greatest development occurred in the 16th century when many noble families erected their private residences here such as Palazzo Benedetto Marone and Palazzo Angelo Marone. The town centre developed around the Church of San Giacomo. Visitors can step inside the church and admire the beautiful paintings and wood carvings.
