Auletta

The name Auletta probably derives from the Latin word olea, which means "olive". This theory is supported by the strong olive growing tradition of the town - to this day Auletta is an important producer of fine virgin olive oil. The historic centre is overlooked by the imposing Castello Marchesale, the town's castle with its large architectural complex dates back to the 12th century. Not far from the castle are the other important landmarks of Port Rivellino, the church of Santa Maria of Grazie, and the imposing bell tower. The town hosts many well preserved palaces, such as Palazzo Mari, where Giuseppe Garibaldi stayed briefly in 1860.
