Morigerati

This ancient medieval town can be found inland of the Golfo di Policastro. Here the ancient buildings are gathered around the old town's belltower. Around the year 1000 a Greek prince, Morgete, settled here, and this is probably the origin of the town's name. like many villages of the Cilento area. Morigerati was inhabited, in the 8th century, by monks fleeing eastern Europe because of the Iconoclast persecutions. The Monks who came to Morigerati brought with them the sacred icon of Saint Demetrius, martyr of Thessaloniki, who became the patron saint of the town. In Morigerati, visitors can also see the lovely 17th century frescos in the loggia of the Cappella Gentiliza and visit the elegant courtyard of the Palazzo Baronale.
