Omignano

The name Omignano derives from the Latin word domìnkanus which means "belonging to the lord" and was probably founded at the time of the Lombard dominion of the area. The town developed during the middle-ages under the governance of its feudal lords, the Sanseverino. Omignano is situated at the foot of Mount Stella, surrounded by forests. Traditionally. Omignano has specialised in the production of wood and chestnuts and in the quarrying of the local sandstone. The mountain style retains traces of an ancient roman settlement and features in many local legends. like the one regarding the fabulous theasure buried here by the rebel slave Spartacus. This is where the ancient town of Petilia once stood, the most important city of thè Lucan dominion.
