The Municipalities of Cilento

Ottati

This town lies at the foot of a mountain by the southern portion of the Monti Alburni. It was founded in the Middle Ages by former citizens of the destroyed town of Fasanella. Ottati's best known attractions are the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Cordoneto - established here just below the town in the 15th century and subsequently extended in the 18th century - and the Convent of San Domenico erected in the year 1480. The convent is built around a beautiful cloister with a two-level colonnade. Finally, another convent, the Convento dei Cappuccini, attracts many visitors and worshippers because it preserves a reliquary, said to contain a thorn from Christ's crown. The town also hosts a very unusual exhibition of contemporary art: along the city walls artists have been invited to paint a series of 80 mural paintings.
