Perdifumo

The town’s name derives from the medieval-Latin expression pes de flumine or "foot of the river". Historically, one the most important monasteries of the Cilento region was established here and, under the protection of the monks who guarded the area against bandits and pirates, the settlement grew and developed. moving subse-quently further down where the soil was more suitable for agriculture. The town includes the three suburbs of Camelia, Mercato e Vatolla, alt deriving from ancient Roman settlements. Traces of this Roman heritage can still be seen on the facade of the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Visitors can also admire the ruins of the ancient Monastery of Sant'Arcangelo, the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Convent of Santa Maria della Pietà.
