Roscigno

Roscigno lies on the slopes of Mount Pruno, also known locally as Balcone (balcony) degli Alburni. The name is believed to come from the word russignuolo, which means "nightingale" in the local dialect, or maybe from the Latin term Ruscidus, meaning springing water. The town is divided in two parts: Roscigno Nuovo (new town) and Roscigno Vecchio (old town). The latter, nowadays completely uninhabited because of various landslides occurred here, offers visitors a very picturesque and mysterious scenario. The town developed around a Benedictine convent, but an earlier settlement had existed here between the 7th and 3th century BC, probably the first in the whole Lucania area. The town hosts a Museum dedicated to Roscigno's rural society and traditional handcrafts, the Museo della Civiltà Contadina. Visitors can also admire the church dedicated to San Nicola di Bari, the well preserved town's fountain, the bell tower and some ancient tombs found on Mount Pruno.
