San Mauro Cilento

The town is named after its patron saint Sanctus Maurus. According to local historians, the first settlement in this area developed around a Benedictine monastery dedicated to this saint. First known as Casavietri, meaning "old houses", it is formed by two villages: Casalsoprano and Casalsottano. Today along-side these. San Mauro also includes the little suburb of Marina di Mezzatorre. The town, accessible by way of two monumental entrances, contains many buildings and historic churches. The local Chapel of the Spirito Santo, hosts a permanent exhibition about Constantinople and its emperors. In another chapel, the Cappella del Carmine, visitors can see a unique Laura, a small cell used by hermits in the early Middle Ages.
