The Municipalities of Cilento

San Mauro la Bruca

Like San Mauro Cilento, this town is named after its patron saint, the abbot Mauro, who was one of Saint Benedicts followers and disciples in the monastery of Subiaco. "Bruca" is a reference to the thick wood that surround the ancient town. The first nucleus of this settlement was, in ancient times, located in the district now called Contrada Santa Maria, which lies roughly 1 km away from the actual town centre, in the place where once stood the Benedictine abbey dedicated to the town's patron saint. This municipality, is recorded in the 13th century as administered by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, often in conflict with the local Diocese. Another future Saint, Nilo da Rossano, lived here as a monk during the 10th century in the local Monastery of San Nazario.
