San Pietro al Tanagro
On the western side of the Vallo di Diano, dose to the river Tanagro the town lies on (he slopes of Mount Ausiliatrice. Tradition has it that is was founded by Saint Peter during his travels. This settlement became a proper town in the 12th century, probably thanks to the Count of Cajano - related to the Norman royal family of Altavilla who erected a borgo known as La Torre. Unfortunately San Pietro was completely destroyed by the Napoleonic army led by French general Massena and further damage was inflicted by an earthquake in 1857. For these reasons, San Pietro has lost all its historical heritage and does not have any building built before the 19th century.
