Sanza

Sanza was already an established and commercially important centre even before the Romans domination over the area. Called first Sontìa from the name of the Lucan people known as "Sontini" and subsequently "Sansa". A group of monks established themselves here in the Grancia of S. Maria de Siripi. In the second half of the 13th century it fell into the hands of many feudal lords until it wasacquired by the Sanseverinos who kept it for 200 years and, later, by thè Carafa family from Policastro. In the 18th century, Sanza's lord, the extravagant Luigi Sanseverino, embellished the town with new palaces, chapels and even ordered the building of an entire new district just outside the town's walls
