Stella Cilento

Right at the foot of Mount Stella, Stella Cilento probably developed over a more ancient settlement identified by some as "Torricelle", town destroyed in the 12th century, and by others as the ancient cit' of "Petilia". Stella was known until 1871 with the less poetic name o Porcili (pig sties) because the local inhabitants were mainly farmers specialised in rearing a particular native breed of pig which was the town's main economic resource. The local Parish Church holds a 16th century marble icon of the Virgin Mary, belonging (o the Sanctuary known as la Madonna della Stella. Also of interest are the remains o the convent erected here by the Augustinian order in the 15th century.
