Teggiano

As late as 1862, this town was known as Diano but its ancient name was "Tegianum" or “Tegea". Inhabited first by Greek settlers, Tegianum later became a populous Roman city with its own forum and guesthouses for those who travelled towards the Bruzii. During the Middle Ages the powerful Sanseverinos built a castle here and fortified it so that the family could take shelter here. The castle was besieged by the Aragonese King, Frederick, because Antonello Sanseverino had taken part in a rebellion of nobleman known as congiura dei Baroni King Frederick, however, did not conquer the fortress and had to accept a treaty with the conspirators. This sealed the towns reputation as an impenetrable structure with its famous high walls and 25 watchtowers. The town also hosts the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore with an interesting 13th century ambo, the Museum of the Diocese, the Herb Museum, the Convent of the S.S. Pietà of the XV century, the Cript of Saint Venera of the XII century, the Church of the Most Holy Annunciation.
