Caggiano
The earliest records about the town of Caggiano date back to the Roman age. Later, in the 11th century, the town fell under the domination of the Normans and their leader Robert Guiscard. The Normans reinforced the pre-existing walls and built the castle around which the rest of the town developed. The three imposing towers of the fortress are still standing and welt preserved. Visitors to the town can admire the many artistic gems that Caggiano has to offer, such as the inlayed decoration of the pulpit of the Church of San Salvatore depicting scenes from the New Testament, an example of the finest artisanship. A local curiosity: The town's historical buildings, especially the ones in via Marvicino have, on the largo doors, the typical picchiotti, doorknockers, richly decorated in various fashions.
