Cannalonga

Cannalonga probably owes its name to the cane thickets that were abundant along the sides of a local stream called Mennoia. The town was known as Tolve at the time of its foundation (9th10th centuy) possibly meaning Terra Ulvae, ulvae being a wetland plant typical this area. The town is first mentioned in historical records in the year 1450 when an important market was established here. In its place traditional fair, the "Fiera della Frecagnola", is still held to this day The town hosts the large Palazzo Ducale dei Mongrovèjo, donated the homonymous family of Spanish dukes who arrived here in 1860. The Palace's courtyard is sumptuously decorated with frescoes and sculptures. On the 23rd of March the town celebrates its patron San Toribio de Mongrovèjo who was archbishop of the Peruvian e ital of Lima in the late 16th Century.
