Torchiara
Originally, the name of Torchiara probably had the rather evocative meaning of "sun lit tower". The first inhabitants of this town came from nearby coastal villages seeking refuge from the Saracen incursions. According to a local legend seven towers were built here defensive purposes. However, there are no ruins to suggest that this was the case. However, two largo towers were added to the local church giving it the appearance of an imposing fortress. Torchiara, town centre is embellished by many palazzos, built here by the local noble families, such as the Palazzo Baronale and Palazzo Torre, and by the historical Churches of San Salvatore and San Bernardino.
