Torraca

Torraca lies high above thick Mediterranean shrub land, and offers great views of the sea over the Golfo di Sapri, reaching as far as the calabrian coastiine. The name of this medieval borgo that surrounds the Castle of Palamolla, probably derives from Torre de jaco, a family who resided here centuries ago. The revolutionary and patriot Carlo Pisacane reached Torraca in 1857 and in the historical Piazza dell'Olmo gave an inspiring speech, urging the crowds to fight for the unification of Italy. Apparently, none of the citizens of Torraca joined the rebels, busy as they were celebrating their patron saint on that day, but they kindly advised Pisacane on how to safely reach the nearby Fortino. The old town includes the beautiful historic Churches of San Pietro Apostolo, Torraca's patron saint, of Sant'Anna and Santa Maria di Loreto.
