Altavilla Silentina
The medieval village is located on a hill covered with olive trees with considerable differences in elevation, starting from 275 meters s.l.m. of the threshold of the "Porta San Biagio", which was the entrance of the medieval city, up to 313 meters s.l.m. of the Norman castle and of the current Piazza Umberto I, where the town hall is located. The elevation of the hill on which the town was founded stands at 424 m s.l.m. Altavilla capital is inhabited by about 6,000 inhabitants and extends over two ridges of the same hill, having the old town to the south-west, while the new part of the country built after the Second World War extends to the north-east. The capital is strategically located having Mount Pizzuto (1403 m s.l.m.) of the Alburni mountain range to the east, the Sele river plain and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. It enjoys a panoramic view of the Piana del Sele and includes the island of Capri, the Lattari Mountains of the Amalfi coast and panoramic views of the city of Eboli and the central-northern part of the Sele plain. Other important cities nearby are: Eboli located at 20 km, Battipaglia at 24.7 km and Paestum at 25.4 km. The municipal territory of 52 square kilometers is located partly in the plains and partly in the hills and is bathed by the river Luciano Calore which delimits the great part of the border to the North and to the West. Towards the north the largest cities are Salerno which is 48 km, Naples 110 km, and Rome 328 km.
